The clock is ticking on
more than just “60 Minutes”…
At a time when a lot of people feel a gnawing discontent despite outward prosperity, it is important to ask why. Some may point to the decline of “family values,” but it’s more a matter of circumstance than of choice…both in Florida and across the nation.
Because of work and other responsibilities, parents have less time for their children than a generation ago. Instead of keeping an eye on neighborhood children and telling parents what they need to know, people worry about retribution and hostility. Instead of feeling part of a community, families feel isolated and alone. As a result, personal challenges often become a crisis that seriously damages parents, children, and all of us before anyone can help.
While the importance (and cost) of homeland security has become painfully obvious, we can still choose to define exactly what it means to our quality of life. For one thing, we can realize that homeland security will never truly exist until we choose to take more responsibility for each other. Too many people have been vulnerable to circumstantial terror for too long, and the damage to our everyday lives is infinitely greater than what Al-Qaida can do.
Ironically, our ability to fight this silent terrorism is endangered at the exact moment when more forceful measures are needed. Worthwhile services that help children, families, and individuals are under siege for many reasons, and it’s all too easy to become discouraged.
In the midst of all this, let’s remember that our greatest blessings come from our strength as a community. The best solutions come when we choose to help each other as a community, especially when financial resources are scarce. This path will allow us to stand firm against every kind of terrorism…including the fear that it’s too late for good people to turn the tide.
